One thing that isn’t apparent right away in photography is that there are two separate skills involved.

1. Taking the photograph

Both technical & the artistic parts.

2. Processing the exposed negative.

Toning, cropping, dodging & burning, generally making the best print possible with it.

I’ve gotten pretty good at black & white processing, but my color stuff has a long way to go. It’s really a different way of seeing the image.

Maybe that’s why my color work is so funky right now?

Anyway, this is Blair Johnson. She got her picture taken yesterday. She’s Atheist, works at Borders and I totally used to have a crush on her in 8th grade.

How’s that for taking it to far?

I was thinking about some newer style photography yesterday and thought it’d be fun to make a triptych of myself. I could never quite get into it though, I kept doing things like try to go to sleep and watch Will & Grace.

I just lost my train of thought.

I shot this on my skateboard a couple of nights ago. When I’m shooting action pictures like this I usually just put my camera to the ground and try to keep it steady. The real trick is skating backwards.

This is my cousin. He’s really cute. Blah, blah, blah.

So here’s a throwaway.

Lately I’ve been more proactive about getting my friends into my studio. It’s fun for me because I get to try new things with a friendly audience and I get a chance to talk to people I might not see otherwise.

Just kidding. I didn’t post any ollie pictures because I wasn’t stoked on them. To be fair though, we only skated that spot for a short time and part of that time I was skating.

And it’s not like I haven’t been trying to set up some Funky-Fresh Night Sessions.

(Or at least set up the one.)

I don’t really consider the photos I take of Trace “skate photos” because most skate photos have some action. Or any action.

I guess if I had to classify them I’d say they were “Lifestyle”.

I took this during a day when Trace and I were driving around looking for something to get to skate. Nothing was really happening and we never got into it. I was also trying to take some pictures but I couldn’t get that done ether. Just wasn’t feeling it.

Sometimes I just have to give it time. I like it now.
