The Spiral Jetty

I got to go to Robert Smithson’s work, the Spiral Jetty a few days ago.

For those who don’t know, the Spiral Jetty is an piece of earth work that was constructed in the early 70’s. It’s located on a fairly remote shore of the Great Salt Lake.

The Spiral Jetty is just what it sounds like, a jetty about a foot off the shore bed in the shape of a spiral.

If you ever get the chance to go, I recommend it.

Sometimes Nelsen is an epic dude. The only thing to do is to shoot him.

When shooting skate there’s a lot of “down time”. By “down time” I mean, time spent not skating. Setting up, or trying again or looking for a new spot or taking a breather. All this time adds up and I make a point of not forgetting my camera during these moments*.

I’ve been shooting a lot of skateboarding lately and these are some of the non skate photos I’ve taken. I promise to post the skate photos here soon, but you know, later.

Nelsen & Trace share a smoke. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who thinks this photo is funny.

I was kind of hoping that one of these dogs would jump in the frame as Nelsen skated, but no dice.

People tend to lurk when you start skating stuff that looks cool. It can get old.

If you lose your deck in a full pipe, it'll just shoot away. I had a few close calls that day with a deck just zooming around and around the pipe, getting closer and closer. Sort of makes you think about how futile life is sometimes.

Exploring fullpipe land.

Yep, Nelsen is ollieing a children’s toy. I mean, another children’s toy.

I can’t even ollie that high on a skateboard.

In the next frame he kickflipped it.

Brooms are crucial to skate missions.

I think this expression is because of the dust.

Beware the Devil.

*I’m not trying to say that I’m the first guy to take a photo of a skateboarder not skating and just looking really cool and stylish or anything like that.

October 5, 2009 | Love City Zine | 3 Comments

Back when this blog was just a twinkle in my host’s eye, I was going to make a zine called The Love City Success Story. I figured I’d want an online presence to go with the zine, so I registered the domain name “thelovecitysuccessstory.com” and promptly stopped any further production.

I eventually put up a photography blog on Love City and got the idea to do a zine that’s sort of based on this blog.

It's pronounced zEEn, not zIne.

It’s a simple deal, 20 pages of mostly photos with not-spell-checked captions. If you live in Provo copies of the Love City Zine can be found. . . somewhere. I’m not sure where I’m going to place them. If you’re not in Provo you can email me for my address or download the PDF here.
